THE RESPONSIBILITY OF CARRYING WHAT BELONGS TO GOD

By Pastor JK Woodall

INTRODUCTION

Numbers 4 continues God's instructions concerning the Levites and their responsibilities in the Tabernacle. In Numbers 3, we learned how God separated the Levites for His service. In Numbers 4, He explains how particular families were to perform their duties, including transporting the sacred furnishings.

This chapter reveals God's expectations concerning service, preparation, holiness, accountability, and obedience.

Central Theme: God does not merely give His people assignments; He establishes how those assignments must be carried out.

Key New Testament Scripture — 1 Corinthians 4:2

“Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.”

VERSE-BY-VERSE STUDY

NUMBERS 4:1 — GOD ESTABLISHES THE ASSIGNMENT

Scripture (KJV)

“And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,”

Explanation

God initiates the instructions concerning the service of the Levites. The organization of the Tabernacle was not Moses' personal invention or Aaron's preference. God established the order and communicated it to the leaders.

Spiritual Insight

There is a difference between doing something we want to do for God and responding faithfully to what God has instructed us to do.

New Testament Support — John 15:16

“Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you…”

Application: Before pursuing a position, seek God's direction. Ask not only what you want to do for God, but what He has entrusted to you.

NUMBERS 4:2 — GOD IDENTIFIES THOSE ASSIGNED TO SERVE

Scripture (KJV)

“Take the sum of the sons of Kohath from among the sons of Levi, after their families, by the house of their fathers,”

Explanation

God directs Moses and Aaron to count the sons of Kohath according to their families and ancestral households. This identifies the particular group responsible for the duties described in the following verses.

Spiritual Insight

God established specific responsibilities within the Levitical community. Each family had a role within the larger work of the Tabernacle.

New Testament Support — 1 Corinthians 12:18

“But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.”

Application: Do not measure your assignment by someone else's position. Focus on faithfully fulfilling the responsibility entrusted to you.

NUMBERS 4:3 — QUALIFICATIONS FOR SERVICE

Scripture (KJV)

“From thirty years old and upward even until fifty years old, all that enter into the host, to do the work in the tabernacle of the congregation.”

Explanation

The men counted for this particular service were between thirty and fifty years old. God established an age range for the specified Tabernacle duties.

This does not mean that every form of Levitical service in every biblical passage had precisely the same age requirements. Here, the instructions concern the work described in Numbers 4.

Spiritual Insight

Desire alone does not establish readiness. The assignment required people who met the prescribed qualifications and could perform the work.

New Testament Support — 1 Timothy 3:6

“Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.”

Application: Allow God to develop your character, understanding, and maturity as you prepare to serve.

NUMBERS 4:4 — THE MOST HOLY THINGS

Scripture (KJV)

“This shall be the service of the sons of Kohath in the tabernacle of the congregation, about the most holy things:”

Explanation

The sons of Kohath were assigned responsibilities involving the most holy furnishings of the Tabernacle. Their duties were distinct from those of the other Levitical families.

Spiritual Insight

God distributes responsibilities according to His established order. The Kohathites were not responsible for everything, but they were accountable for the particular things entrusted to them.

New Testament Support — 1 Corinthians 12:4

“Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.”

Application: You do not have to perform every role to be valuable to God's work. Be faithful in your own assignment.

NUMBERS 4:5 — PREPARATION BEFORE TRANSPORTATION

Scripture (KJV)

“And when the camp setteth forward, Aaron shall come, and his sons, and they shall take down the covering vail, and cover the ark of testimony with it:”

Explanation

When Israel prepared to move, Aaron and his sons were responsible for taking down the veil and using it to cover the Ark of the Testimony.

The Kohathites could not simply enter and begin carrying the Ark. The priests had to prepare it according to God's instructions.

Spiritual Insight

God established an order: the priests prepared the holy furnishings, and the Kohathites carried them.

New Testament Support — 1 Corinthians 14:40

“Let all things be done decently and in order.”

Application: Do not confuse urgency with permission to bypass God's instructions. Preparation is part of responsible service.

NUMBERS 4:6 — THE ARK WAS COVERED

Scripture (KJV)

“And shall put thereon the covering of badgers' skins, and shall spread over it a cloth wholly of blue, and shall put in the staves thereof.”

Explanation

After the veil was placed over the Ark, an additional covering was added, followed by a blue cloth. The carrying poles were also put in place.

These were specific instructions for preparing the Ark for transportation.

Spiritual Insight

The Ark represented God's covenant presence among Israel. Its handling was governed by God's commands, not by personal preference.

New Testament Support — Hebrews 12:28

“Let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear.”

Application: Serve God with reverence. Never allow familiarity with sacred responsibilities to turn into carelessness.

NUMBERS 4:7 — THE TABLE OF SHOWBREAD

Scripture (KJV)

“And upon the table of shewbread they shall spread a cloth of blue, and put thereon the dishes, and the spoons, and the bowls, and covers to cover withal: and the continual bread shall be thereon:”

Explanation

The priests were instructed to cover the Table of Showbread with a blue cloth and place its associated vessels upon it. The continual bread was also to remain there.

The table and its vessels were prepared according to a specific procedure.

Spiritual Insight

God's instructions extended to the details of worship. The people were expected to follow what He commanded rather than improvise their own arrangements.

New Testament Support — Luke 16:10

“He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much.”

Application: Do not dismiss small responsibilities. Faithfulness is often revealed through attention to details.

NUMBERS 4:8 — THE TABLE'S ADDITIONAL COVERING

Scripture (KJV)

“And they shall spread upon them a cloth of scarlet, and cover the same with a covering of badgers' skins, and shall put in the staves thereof.”

Explanation

The priests placed a scarlet cloth over the table and its vessels, added the outer covering, and put the carrying poles in place.

The instructions ensured that the table was prepared for transportation.

Spiritual Insight

The repeated instructions emphasize that the furnishings were not to be moved casually. God's prescribed procedure mattered.

Application: Obedience is not merely knowing God's instructions; it is following them.

NUMBERS 4:9 — THE LAMPSTAND AND ITS VESSELS

Scripture (KJV)

“And they shall take a cloth of blue, and cover the candlestick of the light, and his lamps, and his tongs, and his snuffdishes, and all the oil vessels thereof, wherewith they minister unto it:”

Explanation

The lampstand, its lamps, its tongs, its snuff dishes, and its associated vessels were to be covered for transportation.

These items were part of the equipment used in the Tabernacle's service.

Spiritual Insight

God provided instructions not only for the main furnishings but also for the equipment needed to maintain them.

New Testament Support — Matthew 5:14

“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.”

Application: Let your life reflect the light of Christ. Serve faithfully so that your conduct points others toward God.

NUMBERS 4:10 — PREPARING THE LAMPSTAND FOR TRANSPORT

Scripture (KJV)

“And they shall put it and all the vessels thereof within a covering of badgers' skins, and shall put it upon a bar.”

Explanation

The lampstand and its vessels were placed within an outer covering and secured upon a carrying frame.

God specified how this equipment was to be prepared and transported.

Spiritual Insight

The right destination does not justify disregarding the proper method. God's instructions governed the work.

Application: Follow sound procedures and carry your responsibilities carefully. Do not let haste replace obedience.

NUMBERS 4:11 — THE GOLDEN ALTAR

Scripture (KJV)

“And upon the golden altar they shall spread a cloth of blue, and cover it with a covering of badgers' skins, and shall put to the staves thereof:”

Explanation

The golden altar was covered with a blue cloth and then with its outer covering. Its carrying poles were prepared.

The altar was associated with the burning of incense in the Tabernacle.

Spiritual Insight

The altar was not simply picked up and moved. It had to be prepared according to God's instructions.

New Testament Support — Revelation 8:3–4

These verses describe incense offered with the prayers of the saints before God.

Application: Treat prayer and worship as meaningful acts of devotion. Do not allow routine to replace reverence.

NUMBERS 4:12 — THE VESSELS OF MINISTRY

Scripture (KJV)

“And they shall take all the instruments of ministry, wherewith they minister in the sanctuary, and put them in a cloth of blue, and cover them with a covering of badgers' skins, and shall put them on a bar:”

Explanation

The priests were instructed to gather the instruments used in the sanctuary, cover them, and prepare them for transportation.

Spiritual Insight

God's instructions included the equipment used in worship, not merely the major furnishings.

New Testament Support — 2 Timothy 2:21

“If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work.”

Application: Make yourself available for God's use through faithful service, godly character, and obedience.

NUMBERS 4:13 — THE ALTAR WAS CLEARED

Scripture (KJV)

“And they shall take away the ashes from the altar, and spread a purple cloth thereon:”

Explanation

Before the altar was transported, its ashes were removed and a purple cloth was spread over it.

This was a practical step in the prescribed preparation of the altar.

Spiritual Insight

The work of the Tabernacle included necessary tasks that might not have appeared impressive, but they were essential to carrying out God's instructions.

Application: Do not neglect necessary work because it seems ordinary. Faithfulness includes completing responsibilities that others may never notice.

NUMBERS 4:14 — THE ALTAR'S EQUIPMENT

Scripture (KJV)

“And they shall put upon it all the vessels thereof, wherewith they minister about it, even the censers, the fleshhooks, and the shovels, and the basons, all the vessels of the altar; and they shall spread upon it a covering of badgers' skins, and put to the staves of it.”

Explanation

The priests placed the altar's equipment upon it, covered it with the outer covering, and prepared its carrying poles.

The vessels included the censers, fleshhooks, shovels, and basins.

Spiritual Insight

The instructions were detailed and comprehensive. The people had to account for the altar and its associated equipment.

New Testament Support — 1 Corinthians 14:33

“For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.”

Application: Order and accountability help God's people carry out their responsibilities faithfully.

NUMBERS 4:15 — THE KOHATHITES CARRY THE HOLY THINGS

Scripture (KJV)

“And when Aaron and his sons have made an end of covering the sanctuary, and all the vessels of the sanctuary, as the camp is to set forward; after that, the sons of Kohath shall come to bear it: but they shall not touch any holy thing, lest they die. These things are the burden of the sons of Kohath in the tabernacle of the congregation.”

Explanation

This verse summarizes the relationship between the priests' preparation and the Kohathites' responsibility.

Aaron and his sons first covered the sanctuary furnishings. Only after that preparation could the Kohathites carry them.

God also prohibited the Kohathites from touching the holy things, warning of the consequences of disobedience.

Spiritual Insight

The Kohathites were entrusted with a sacred assignment, but they were not free to handle the holy furnishings however they wished.

The responsibility to carry did not cancel the boundaries established by God.

New Testament Support — Hebrews 12:28

“Let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear.”

Application: Being entrusted with a responsibility does not give us permission to ignore the instructions governing it.

Key Principle: God cares about both the assignment and how we fulfill it.

NUMBERS 4:16 — ELEAZAR'S RESPONSIBILITY

Scripture (KJV)

“And to the office of Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest pertaineth the oil for the light, and the sweet incense, and the daily meat offering, and the anointing oil, and the oversight of all the tabernacle, and of all that therein is, in the sanctuary, and in the vessels thereof.”

Explanation

Eleazar, Aaron's son, was entrusted with responsibilities involving the oil for the light, the incense, the daily grain offering, the anointing oil, and oversight of the Tabernacle and its furnishings.

His duties included supervision as well as responsibility for important materials used in worship.

Spiritual Insight

Leadership is more than occupying a position. It means accepting responsibility for what has been entrusted to you.

New Testament Support — Luke 12:48

“For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required…”

Application: The greater the responsibility, the greater the accountability. Leaders must take their assignments seriously.

NUMBERS 4:17 — GOD REAFFIRMS HIS INSTRUCTIONS

Scripture (KJV)

“And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,”

Explanation

God speaks again as He continues His instructions concerning the Kohathites.

The next verses reinforce the need for Moses and Aaron to protect the Kohathites from the consequences of violating God's commands.

Spiritual Insight

God's instructions were not optional suggestions. They established the boundaries within which the people were expected to serve.

Application: Do not assume that familiarity with an instruction gives you permission to disregard it.

NUMBERS 4:18 — PROTECTING THE KOHATHITES

Scripture (KJV)

“Cut ye not off the tribe of the families of the Kohathites from among the Levites:”

Explanation

God warns Moses and Aaron not to allow the Kohathite families to be cut off from among the Levites.

This warning must be understood alongside the serious consequences associated with mishandling the holy furnishings.

Spiritual Insight

Moses and Aaron had a responsibility to ensure that the Kohathites could carry out their service without violating God's instructions.

Leadership involved more than assigning work; it also required communicating boundaries and helping people fulfill their duties correctly.

New Testament Support — Acts 20:28

“Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers…”

Application: Godly leaders must provide appropriate oversight and help those they lead understand their responsibilities.

NUMBERS 4:19 — A WAY TO SERVE SAFELY

Scripture (KJV)

“But thus do unto them, that they may live, and not die, when they approach unto the most holy things: Aaron and his sons shall go in, and appoint them every one to his service and to his burden:”

Explanation

God gives Moses and Aaron specific directions to ensure that the Kohathites can perform their duties without suffering the consequences of violating the sacred boundaries.

Aaron and his sons were responsible for assigning each man his service and burden.

Spiritual Insight

God did not merely warn the people about danger. He also established the procedure by which they could carry out their responsibilities.

Application: Effective leadership explains both what people must avoid and what they must do to fulfill their assignments correctly.

NUMBERS 4:20 — RESPECTING THE BOUNDARIES

Scripture (KJV)

“But they shall not go in to see when the holy things are covered, lest they die.”

Explanation

The Kohathites were forbidden to enter and look upon the holy things during the covering process.

The priests had to complete the preparation before the Kohathites approached to carry the furnishings.

Spiritual Insight

Proximity to sacred things did not remove the boundaries God had established.

The Kohathites had access to an important ministry responsibility, but they were not authorized to participate in every aspect of its preparation.

New Testament Support — 1 Peter 1:15–16

“But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.”

Application: Familiarity with church activities, ministry responsibilities, or biblical knowledge should never cause us to lose reverence for God.

NUMBERS 4:21 — THE SONS OF GERSHON

Scripture (KJV)

“And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,”

Explanation

God now turns to the sons of Gershon. The chapter shifts from the Kohathites' responsibilities to another Levitical family.

Spiritual Insight

God's organization of the Tabernacle involved multiple families with different duties.

The Kohathites had their assignment, and the Gershonites would receive theirs.

New Testament Support — Romans 12:4–5

Paul explains that the body has many members and that those members do not all have the same function.

Application: Do not assume that everyone must have the same role to contribute to God's work.

NUMBERS 4:22 — COUNTING THE GERSHONITES

Scripture (KJV)

“Take also the sum of the sons of Gershon, throughout the houses of their fathers, by their families;”

Explanation

God instructs Moses to count the sons of Gershon according to their ancestral households and families.

Just as the Kohathites had been counted, the Gershonites were identified for their assigned service.

Spiritual Insight

The Gershonites were not overlooked simply because their responsibilities differed from those of the Kohathites.

God established a place for their service within the larger work of the Tabernacle.

New Testament Support — 1 Corinthians 12:14

“For the body is not one member, but many.”

Application: The church needs people with different gifts and responsibilities. No faithful assignment should be dismissed merely because it is different.

NUMBERS 4:23 — QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE GERSHONITES

Scripture (KJV)

“From thirty years old and upward until fifty years old shalt thou number them; all that enter in to perform the service, to do the work in the tabernacle of the congregation.”

Explanation

The Gershonites counted for this service were between thirty and fifty years old and qualified to perform the assigned work.

The same age range specified for the Kohathites appears here for the Gershonites' service.

Spiritual Insight

God established defined qualifications for this particular work. The assignment required people who met the prescribed requirements and could perform their duties.

New Testament Support — 1 Timothy 3:10

“And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless.”

Application: Allow your character, maturity, and faithfulness to develop as you prepare for greater responsibility.

NUMBERS 4:24 — THE SERVICE AND BURDENS OF THE GERSHONITES

Scripture (KJV)

“This is the service of the families of the Gershonites, to serve, and for burdens:”

Explanation

This verse introduces the specific duties of the Gershonites. The following verses identify their responsibilities, including the curtains, coverings, hangings, and cords associated with the Tabernacle.

Their duties differed from those of the Kohathites, who carried the sacred furnishings described earlier in the chapter.

Spiritual Insight

The Gershonites' assignment was different, but it was essential to the Tabernacle's operation and transportation.

Their work reminds us that ministry is not limited to public leadership, preaching, or visible spiritual gifts. God's work also depends on people who faithfully carry responsibilities behind the scenes.

New Testament Support — Galatians 6:2

“Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.”

Application: Do not despise the work that supports others. The assignment that receives the least recognition may still be essential to the larger purpose.

Key Principle: Different responsibilities can serve the same divine purpose.

MAJOR SPIRITUAL REVELATIONS — PART I

1. God Establishes the Assignment

The Kohathites and Gershonites received distinct responsibilities within the same Tabernacle ministry.

Supporting Scripture: 1 Corinthians 12:18

2. God Gives Instructions for the Assignment

The priests had to prepare the furnishings before the Kohathites could carry them.

Supporting Scripture: 1 Corinthians 14:40

3. Holiness Requires Reverence

The Kohathites were prohibited from touching or looking upon the holy things contrary to God's instructions.

Supporting Scripture: Hebrews 12:28

4. Leadership Requires Accountability

Eleazar and the priests carried responsibilities for oversight and the proper preparation of the sanctuary.

Supporting Scripture: Luke 12:48

5. Different Assignments Work Toward One Purpose

The Kohathites and Gershonites served in different capacities, yet both were necessary to the Tabernacle's operation.

Supporting Scripture: Romans 12:4–5

6. Faithfulness Matters More Than Visibility

The Gershonites' work involved essential components and coverings of the Tabernacle.

Supporting Scripture: Colossians 3:23

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. Why did God establish specific qualifications and responsibilities for the Levites?

  2. What does the preparation of the holy furnishings teach us about following instructions?

  3. How can someone become too familiar with the things of God?

  4. What is the difference between being called to serve and being prepared to serve?

  5. Why is it dangerous to compare our assignment with someone else's?

  6. What responsibilities do church leaders have in preparing and protecting those they lead?

  7. What assignment has God placed in your hands that you need to handle more faithfully?

CLOSING EXHORTATION

Numbers 4:1–24 teaches us that God is concerned with stewardship, preparation, holiness, accountability, and faithful service.

The Kohathites carried the sacred furnishings. The Gershonites were assigned other essential components of the Tabernacle. Each family had a distinct responsibility, and each was expected to follow God's instructions.

Do not spend so much time watching what someone else is carrying that you neglect what God has placed in your own hands.

You may not have the same position, visibility, or responsibilities as another person. But when you faithfully fulfill what God has entrusted to you, your service contributes to His larger purpose.

FINAL REFLECTION

What has God placed in my hands? Am I prepared to carry it? Am I following His instructions? Am I being faithful with my assignment?

CLOSING SCRIPTURE — COLOSSIANS 3:23

“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.”
