Leviticus 27:22–34 (Part II): Personal Commitments to God

Everything Belongs to the Lord

By Pastor J.K. Woodall
Senior Pastor | Revival Center Hesperia

Theme

God is the Owner of all things, and our stewardship reflects our commitment to Him.

Key Verse

"And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the tree, is the LORD'S. It is holy to the LORD."
— Leviticus 27:30 (NKJV)

Introduction

The final verses of Leviticus conclude God's instructions to Israel by focusing on property dedicated to the Lord, devoted things, the tithe, and His final commandments through Moses. While Part I emphasized our personal commitments, Part II reminds us that everything we possess already belongs to God. We are not owners—we are stewards. Our giving, our worship, and our obedience reveal whether we truly recognize God's ownership over every area of our lives.

Central Truth

A heart committed to God recognizes that every blessing, possession, and resource belongs to Him. Faithful stewardship is an act of worship.

Verse-by-Verse Study

Leviticus 27:22-23

A Purchased Field Dedicated to the Lord

Observation

If someone dedicated land that had been purchased rather than inherited, the priest would determine its value based upon the years remaining until the Year of Jubilee.

Spiritual Lesson

God distinguishes between temporary possessions and permanent inheritance. Everything is still accountable to Him.

New Testament Connection

1 Peter 1:4

"To an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away..."

Our greatest inheritance is found in Christ.

Leviticus 27:24

The Field Returns at Jubilee

Observation

At the Year of Jubilee, the field returned to its original family.

Spiritual Lesson

God established restoration and prevented permanent loss among His people.

New Testament Connection

Luke 4:18-19

Jesus proclaimed the acceptable year of the Lord, announcing spiritual freedom and restoration.

Leviticus 27:25

The Sanctuary Shekel

Observation

All valuations were measured according to God's standard.

Spiritual Lesson

God determines the standard—not mankind.

New Testament Connection

2 Timothy 3:16-17

"All Scripture is given by inspiration of God..."

The Word of God remains the standard for faith and life.

Leviticus 27:26

The Firstborn Already Belongs to God

"Only the firstborn of the animals... no man shall dedicate."

Observation

The firstborn could not be dedicated because it already belonged to the Lord.

Spiritual Lesson

You cannot offer to God what already belongs to Him.

New Testament Connection

Colossians 1:15

Jesus is called the Firstborn over all creation, demonstrating His preeminence.

Leviticus 27:27

Redeeming an Unclean Animal

Observation

Unclean animals could be redeemed by paying their value plus one-fifth.

Spiritual Lesson

Redemption always comes at a cost.

New Testament Connection

1 Peter 1:18-19

"You were not redeemed with corruptible things... but with the precious blood of Christ."

Jesus paid the ultimate redemption price.

Leviticus 27:28

Devoted Things

Observation

Anything completely devoted to the Lord became permanently His.

Spiritual Lesson

Complete surrender leaves no room for reclaiming what has been given to God.

New Testament Connection

Galatians 2:20

"I have been crucified with Christ..."

Our lives are no longer our own.

Leviticus 27:29

Persons Devoted to Destruction

Observation

This verse addresses God's judicial judgment under Israel's covenant and should not be confused with ordinary vows.

Spiritual Lesson

God is both merciful and perfectly just.

New Testament Connection

Hebrews 9:27

"It is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment."

God's justice remains certain.

Leviticus 27:30

The Tithe Belongs to the Lord

"The tithe... is the LORD'S."

Observation

The tithe was never viewed as Israel's gift to God—it already belonged to Him.

Spiritual Lesson

Giving acknowledges God's ownership, not ours.

New Testament Connection

Matthew 23:23

Jesus affirmed tithing while emphasizing justice, mercy, and faith.

Leviticus 27:31

Redeeming the Tithe

Observation

Anyone redeeming part of the tithe added one-fifth to its value.

Spiritual Lesson

God desires honesty and integrity in stewardship.

New Testament Connection

2 Corinthians 9:7

"God loves a cheerful giver."

Giving flows from a willing heart.

Leviticus 27:32-33

The Animal Tithe

Observation

Every tenth animal belonged to the Lord and could not be exchanged.

Spiritual Lesson

God deserves our first and our best—not our leftovers.

New Testament Connection

Romans 12:11

"Serving the Lord."

Our service to God should be wholehearted and sincere.

Leviticus 27:34

The Conclusion of Leviticus

"These are the commandments which the LORD commanded Moses..."

Observation

Leviticus ends by affirming that these instructions came directly from God.

Spiritual Lesson

God's Word is complete, authoritative, and worthy of obedience.

New Testament Connection

John 14:15

"If you love Me, keep My commandments."

Love for God is demonstrated through obedience.

Major Lessons

  1. God owns everything.

  2. We are stewards, not owners.

  3. Redemption always requires a price.

  4. God's standards never change.

  5. Worship includes faithful stewardship.

  6. Giving is an act of faith and trust.

  7. Obedience demonstrates genuine love for God.

  8. What belongs to God should never be treated casually.

Christ Revealed in Leviticus 27

  • Jesus is our Redeemer who paid the full price for our salvation (1 Peter 1:18–19).

  • Jesus is the Firstborn who belongs completely to the Father (Colossians 1:15).

  • Jesus fulfilled the hope of Jubilee, bringing freedom, restoration, and reconciliation (Luke 4:18–19).

  • Through Christ, believers become living sacrifices, wholly dedicated to God (Romans 12:1).

Application

Ask yourself:

  • Have I truly surrendered every area of my life to God?

  • Do I recognize that my finances, talents, time, and possessions belong to Him?

  • Am I managing God's resources faithfully?

  • Does my giving reflect gratitude or obligation?

  • What personal commitment has God called me to renew?

Discussion Questions

  1. Why does God emphasize His ownership throughout this chapter?

  2. What is the difference between ownership and stewardship?

  3. How does the Year of Jubilee point to Jesus Christ?

  4. Why is giving an act of worship?

  5. What areas of your life are difficult to surrender completely to God?

Memory Verse

Psalm 24:1 (NKJV)

"The earth is the LORD'S, and all its fullness, The world and those who dwell therein."

Closing Thought

Leviticus begins with God calling His people to approach Him through sacrifice and concludes by reminding them that everything belongs to Him. The message of the book is clear: a holy God desires a holy people whose worship is demonstrated through obedience, faithful stewardship, and wholehearted commitment.

As New Testament believers, we no longer bring animal sacrifices, but we are called to offer ourselves completely to Christ.

Romans 12:1

"I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service."

Leviticus teaches us that holy living begins with holy hearts—and holy hearts produce faithful commitments to God.
