The Book of Numbers — Chapter 4:25–49 (Part II)

“Faithful to the Assignment”

By Pastor JK Woodall Revival Center Hesperia

Part II continues the verse-by-verse study of Numbers 4, beginning with the responsibilities of the Gershonites and moving through the duties of the Merarites, the census of the Levites assigned to service, and the final count of those appointed to carry the Tabernacle.

The central lesson is that God assigned different responsibilities to different families, established oversight, and expected His people to serve according to His instructions.

This study uses the King James Version (KJV), with New Testament supporting Scriptures and practical applications.

NUMBERS 4:25–49 — PART II

FAITHFUL TO THE ASSIGNMENT

INTRODUCTION

In Part I, we studied Numbers 4:1–24 and discovered how God assigned the Kohathites responsibility for transporting the sacred furnishings and began identifying the service of the Gershonites.

In Part II, God continues His instructions. We will examine the duties of the Gershonites, the responsibilities of the Merarites, and the census of the Levites who were qualified for the work.

One important truth runs throughout this chapter:

God does not require everyone to carry the same burden, but He does require everyone to be faithful to the responsibility He has assigned.

Key Scripture — Colossians 3:23 (KJV)

“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;”

SECTION ONE: THE GERSHONITES AND THEIR ASSIGNMENT

NUMBERS 4:25 — CARRYING THE COVERINGS

Scripture (KJV)

“And they shall bear the curtains of the tabernacle, and the tabernacle of the congregation, his covering, and the covering of badgers' skins that is above upon it, and the hanging for the door of the tabernacle of the congregation,”

Explanation

The Gershonites were assigned responsibility for transporting the curtains, coverings, and entrance hanging associated with the Tabernacle.

While the Kohathites carried the sacred furnishings, the Gershonites carried the materials that formed and protected the Tabernacle's structure.

Spiritual Insight

The Gershonites were not carrying the Ark, but they were carrying materials essential to the Tabernacle.

Their assignment reminds us that the work of God involves more than the parts people consider most important.

New Testament Support — 1 Corinthians 12:22 (KJV)

“Nay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary:”

Application: Do not measure your importance by the visibility of your assignment. What God has entrusted to you may be essential to a purpose larger than yourself.

NUMBERS 4:26 — EVERY PART HAD A PURPOSE

Scripture (KJV)

“And the hangings of the court, and the hanging for the door of the gate of the court, which is by the tabernacle and by the altar round about, and their cords, and all the instruments of their service, and all that is made for them: so shall they serve.”

Explanation

The Gershonites were also responsible for the hangings around the court, the entrance hanging, the cords, and the equipment associated with their service.

Their responsibilities extended beyond the main curtains of the Tabernacle.

Spiritual Insight

God identified the specific items entrusted to the Gershonites. Their assignment was not simply to carry whatever they chose; they were responsible for particular materials.

This teaches us that faithfulness requires knowing what belongs to our responsibility.

New Testament Support — 1 Corinthians 14:40 (KJV)

“Let all things be done decently and in order.”

Application: Know your assignment. Unclear responsibilities can create confusion, but understanding your duties helps you serve faithfully.

NUMBERS 4:27 — SERVICE UNDER AUTHORITY

Scripture (KJV)

“At the appointment of Aaron and his sons shall be all the service of the sons of the Gershonites, in all their burdens, and in all their service: and ye shall appoint unto them in charge all their burdens.”

Explanation

The Gershonites were to perform their duties under the direction of Aaron and his sons. Their responsibilities were assigned and supervised rather than left to individual preference.

Spiritual Insight

God established both assignments and oversight.

The Gershonites had real responsibilities, but they were expected to carry them out according to the established order.

This does not mean that every human leader is always right. It means that God's work requires appropriate accountability and faithful leadership.

New Testament Support — Hebrews 13:17 (KJV)

“Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account…”

Application: Serve with a teachable spirit. Accept appropriate direction, communicate clearly, and remain accountable for the work entrusted to you.

NUMBERS 4:28 — ITHAMAR'S OVERSIGHT

Scripture (KJV)

“This is the service of the families of the sons of Gershon in the tabernacle of the congregation: and their charge shall be under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.”

Explanation

Ithamar, Aaron's son, was assigned oversight of the Gershonites' service.

The verse confirms that their responsibilities operated within an established structure of leadership.

Spiritual Insight

An assignment includes accountability.

The Gershonites were not merely told what to carry; their work was also placed under supervision.

New Testament Support — 1 Corinthians 4:2 (KJV)

“Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.”

Application: Be faithful whether someone is watching you or not. Accountability should strengthen our service, not replace our personal responsibility before God.

SECTION TWO: THE MERARITES AND THEIR ASSIGNMENT

NUMBERS 4:29 — ANOTHER FAMILY, ANOTHER RESPONSIBILITY

Scripture (KJV)

“As for the sons of Merari, thou shalt number them after their families, by the house of their fathers;”

Explanation

God now directs Moses to identify the sons of Merari according to their families and ancestral households.

The chapter has already described the Kohathites and Gershonites. Now the Merarites are brought into focus.

Spiritual Insight

God's organization of the Tabernacle included different families with different responsibilities.

The Merarites were not assigned the same work as the Kohathites or Gershonites. They had their own duties.

New Testament Support — Romans 12:6 (KJV)

“Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith;”

Application: Do not assume that another person's assignment is the one you should pursue. Learn to recognize and faithfully perform the work entrusted to you.

NUMBERS 4:30 — QUALIFIED FOR THE WORK

Scripture (KJV)

“From thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old shalt thou number them, every one that entereth into the service, to do the work of the tabernacle of the congregation.”

Explanation

The Merarites counted for this service were between thirty and fifty years old.

As with the Kohathites and Gershonites, God established an age range for the specified work.

Spiritual Insight

The service of the Tabernacle involved defined qualifications. People were counted according to the requirements God established for that assignment.

New Testament Support — 2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV)

“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

Application: Prepare yourself for the responsibilities you carry. In ministry, preparation and faithfulness belong together.

NUMBERS 4:31 — THE BURDEN OF THE MERARITES

Scripture (KJV)

“And this is the charge of their burden, according to all their service in the tabernacle of the congregation; the boards of the tabernacle, and the bars thereof, and the pillars thereof, and sockets thereof,”

Explanation

The Merarites were responsible for transporting the structural components of the Tabernacle, including its boards, bars, pillars, and sockets.

These components formed the framework that supported the Tabernacle.

Spiritual Insight

The Merarites carried the structural elements, while other families carried the coverings and sacred furnishings.

The Tabernacle required all these different responsibilities to be fulfilled.

New Testament Support — Ephesians 2:21 (KJV)

“In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:”

Application: Some people build, some support, and some carry other responsibilities. Do not despise the work that helps establish and maintain what others depend upon.

NUMBERS 4:32 — THE SUPPORTING COMPONENTS

Scripture (KJV)

“And the pillars of the court round about, and their sockets, and their pins, and their cords, with all their instruments, and with all their service: and by name ye shall reckon the instruments of the charge of their burden.”

Explanation

The Merarites were also responsible for the pillars, sockets, pins, cords, and associated equipment used around the court.

God instructed Moses to identify the items for which they were responsible.

Spiritual Insight

The smaller components mattered because they served a purpose within the larger structure.

A pillar without a secure base or a structure without its necessary supports cannot function as intended.

New Testament Support — Ephesians 4:16 (KJV)

“From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth…”

Application: Never underestimate the contribution of supporting members. The health of a ministry depends on more than its most visible leaders.

NUMBERS 4:33 — THE ASSIGNMENT OF MERARI

Scripture (KJV)

“This is the service of the families of the sons of Merari, according to all their service, in the tabernacle of the congregation, under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.”

Explanation

The verse summarizes the Merarites' responsibilities and places their service under Ithamar's oversight.

Ithamar supervised both the Gershonites and the Merarites.

Spiritual Insight

God established distinct assignments while maintaining an organized system of oversight.

Different responsibilities did not mean that every family operated independently of the larger structure.

New Testament Support — 1 Corinthians 12:25 (KJV)

“That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another.”

Application: Different roles should not produce division. They should help God's people work together toward a common purpose.

SECTION THREE: COUNTING THOSE ASSIGNED TO SERVICE

NUMBERS 4:34 — MOSES, AARON, AND THE LEADERS

Scripture (KJV)

“And Moses and Aaron and the chief of the congregation numbered the sons of the Kohathites after their families, and after the house of their fathers,”

Explanation

Moses, Aaron, and the leaders of the congregation began counting the Kohathites according to their families and ancestral households.

The process was conducted under established leadership rather than through an informal estimate.

Spiritual Insight

The work of God required organization and accountability. The census helped establish who was assigned to the specified responsibilities.

New Testament Support — 1 Corinthians 14:40 (KJV)

“Let all things be done decently and in order.”

Application: Spiritual commitment does not eliminate the need for organization. Responsible leadership knows who is serving and what work must be accomplished.

NUMBERS 4:35 — THE QUALIFIED MEN OF KOHATH

Scripture (KJV)

“From thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old, every one that entereth into the service, for the work in the tabernacle of the congregation:”

Explanation

The census included Kohathite men between thirty and fifty years old who were qualified for the specified service.

This was the age range established for the work described in the chapter.

Spiritual Insight

God's instructions were specific. The census was connected to actual service, not merely to identifying everyone who belonged to the tribe.

New Testament Support — 1 Corinthians 12:7 (KJV)

“But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.”

Application: The goal of spiritual gifts and responsibilities is service that benefits others. Ask how you can faithfully contribute to the work God has entrusted to His people.

NUMBERS 4:36 — THE NUMBER OF THE KOHATHITES

Scripture (KJV)

“And those that were numbered of them by their families were two thousand seven hundred and fifty.”

Explanation

The census identified 2,750 Kohathite men within the specified age range and service category.

This was not the total population of the entire Kohathite family. It was the number counted for the work described in this chapter.

Spiritual Insight

God's work involved real people with defined responsibilities. The number reflects the scale of the service assigned to this family.

New Testament Support — Romans 12:4 (KJV)

“For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office:”

Application: God's work may involve many people, but the number of workers is not the only measure of success. Faithfulness in the assigned responsibility matters.

NUMBERS 4:37 — THE KOHATHITES' SERVICE WAS RECORDED

Scripture (KJV)

“These were they that were numbered of the families of the Kohathites, all that might do service in the tabernacle of the congregation, which Moses and Aaron did number according to the commandment of the LORD by the hand of Moses.”

Explanation

The verse confirms the result of the Kohathite census and emphasizes that it was conducted according to God's command.

The count was not an independent decision made by Moses and Aaron; it followed the instructions they had received.

Spiritual Insight

Faithfulness includes carrying out God's instructions as given.

The leaders were responsible for administering the assignment, but they were accountable to the command of the Lord.

New Testament Support — James 1:22 (KJV)

“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.”

Application: Hearing God's instructions is not enough. Faithfulness requires putting them into practice.

NUMBERS 4:38 — THE GERSHONITES ARE COUNTED

Scripture (KJV)

“And those that were numbered of the sons of Gershon, throughout their families, and by the house of their fathers,”

Explanation

The census now records the sons of Gershon according to their families and ancestral households.

The process follows the same general pattern used for the Kohathites.

Spiritual Insight

The Gershonites' duties were different, but their service was also recognized and recorded.

New Testament Support — 1 Corinthians 12:5 (KJV)

“And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.”

Application: Different responsibilities do not mean different worth. Every assignment should be evaluated according to faithfulness to God, not comparison with another worker.

NUMBERS 4:39 — THE GERSHONITES' AGE RANGE

Scripture (KJV)

“From thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old, every one that entereth into the service, for the work in the tabernacle of the congregation,”

Explanation

The Gershonites were counted within the same thirty-to-fifty-year age range for the specified service.

Spiritual Insight

God established a defined qualification for this work. The people counted were those eligible for the responsibilities described in the chapter.

New Testament Support — 2 Timothy 2:21 (KJV)

“If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work.”

Application: Be prepared for the work you are called to do. Character, maturity, and readiness matter in faithful service.

NUMBERS 4:40 — THE NUMBER OF THE GERSHONITES

Scripture (KJV)

“Even those that were numbered of them, throughout their families, by the house of their fathers, were two thousand and six hundred and thirty.”

Explanation

The census identified 2,630 Gershonite men within the specified age range and service category.

These were the men counted for the work assigned to the Gershonites.

Spiritual Insight

The Gershonites had a substantial responsibility involving the Tabernacle's curtains, coverings, and hangings.

Their count reminds us that important work often requires many people serving together.

New Testament Support — Hebrews 6:10 (KJV)

“For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name…”

Application: Continue serving faithfully, even when your contribution receives little public recognition.

NUMBERS 4:41 — THE GERSHONITES' SERVICE WAS RECORDED

Scripture (KJV)

“These are they that were numbered of the families of the sons of Gershon, of all that might do service in the tabernacle of the congregation, whom Moses and Aaron did number according to the commandment of the LORD.”

Explanation

The verse confirms the Gershonite census and states that it was conducted according to the Lord's command.

Their service was part of the organized work of the Tabernacle.

Spiritual Insight

God's instructions applied to all the families involved, not just the Kohathites who carried the most sacred furnishings.

New Testament Support — Colossians 3:23 (KJV)

“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;”

Application: Serve God wholeheartedly, regardless of whether your responsibility is visible or performed behind the scenes.

NUMBERS 4:42 — THE MERARITES ARE COUNTED

Scripture (KJV)

“And those that were numbered of the families of the sons of Merari, throughout their families, by the house of their fathers,”

Explanation

The census proceeds to the Merarites, whose responsibilities included transporting the structural components of the Tabernacle.

Spiritual Insight

God's order included the people responsible for the structure, not just those handling the sacred furnishings.

New Testament Support — 1 Corinthians 12:20 (KJV)

“But now are they many members, yet but one body.”

Application: Do not dismiss a supporting role. A structure requires its supporting components just as a ministry requires people who fulfill different responsibilities.

NUMBERS 4:43 — THE MERARITES' QUALIFICATIONS

Scripture (KJV)

“From thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old, every one that entereth into the service, for the work in the tabernacle of the congregation,”

Explanation

The Merarites counted for this service were between thirty and fifty years old.

The census again reflects the age range established for the specified work.

Spiritual Insight

The work of the Tabernacle required an organized and qualified workforce.

New Testament Support — 2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV)

“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

Application: Be diligent in preparing for your responsibilities. Do not confuse enthusiasm with readiness.

NUMBERS 4:44 — THE NUMBER OF THE MERARITES

Scripture (KJV)

“Even those that were numbered of them after their families, were three thousand and two hundred.”

Explanation

The census identified 3,200 Merarite men within the specified age range and service category.

The Merarites had a substantial responsibility involving the boards, pillars, sockets, bars, and other structural components of the Tabernacle.

Spiritual Insight

The family with responsibility for the structural components had the largest number of men counted among the three groups in this census.

Their assignment required substantial participation.

New Testament Support — Ephesians 4:16 (KJV)

“From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth…”

Application: The strength of a ministry is supported by people who faithfully contribute to the whole. Do your part well.

NUMBERS 4:45 — THE MERARITES' SERVICE WAS RECORDED

Scripture (KJV)

“These be those that were numbered of the families of the sons of Merari, whom Moses and Aaron numbered according to the word of the LORD by the hand of Moses.”

Explanation

The verse concludes the record of the Merarites' census and confirms that the count was conducted according to the Lord's instructions.

Spiritual Insight

The same standard of obedience governed the different families.

The Kohathites, Gershonites, and Merarites had different duties, but all were expected to follow God's command.

New Testament Support — John 14:15 (KJV)

“If ye love me, keep my commandments.”

Application: Faithfulness is demonstrated by obedience, not simply by claiming to have a place in God's work.

NUMBERS 4:46 — THE LEVITES WERE COUNTED BY THEIR FAMILIES

Scripture (KJV)

“All those that were numbered of the Levites, whom Moses and Aaron and the chief of Israel numbered, after their families, and after the house of their fathers,”

Explanation

This verse brings together the census records of the Levitical families included in the chapter.

Moses, Aaron, and Israel's leaders were involved in identifying those assigned to the specified service.

Spiritual Insight

God's work was organized across multiple families and responsibilities. The census helped establish the people available for the work of transporting and serving the Tabernacle.

New Testament Support — Ephesians 4:11–12 (KJV)

These verses explain that God gives different ministry roles for the perfecting of the saints and the work of ministry.

Application: Recognize the importance of organized service. Each role should contribute to building up God's people.

NUMBERS 4:47 — SERVICE INVOLVED BOTH WORK AND BURDEN

Scripture (KJV)

“From thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old, every one that came to do the service of the ministry, and the service of the burden in the tabernacle of the congregation,”

Explanation

The census included those who entered into the service of the ministry and the work of transporting the Tabernacle.

The language recognizes both the service performed and the physical burdens carried.

Spiritual Insight

The work of the Tabernacle involved spiritual responsibility and practical labor.

The people were not merely associated with the sanctuary; they had actual duties to perform.

New Testament Support — James 2:17 (KJV)

“Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.”

Application: Faithfulness must become visible in how we serve. Spiritual commitment should produce responsible action.

NUMBERS 4:48 — THE TOTAL NUMBER ASSIGNED TO SERVICE

Scripture (KJV)

“Even those that were numbered of them, were eight thousand and five hundred and fourscore.”

Explanation

The total number of Levites counted for the specified service was 8,580 men.

This total includes the three groups counted in the chapter:

  • Kohathites: 2,750

  • Gershonites: 2,630

  • Merarites: 3,200

Together, these numbers equal 8,580.

This was the count of those qualified for the specified service, not the total population of every Levite of every age.

Spiritual Insight

The transportation of the Tabernacle required a large, organized workforce. Each family contributed according to its assignment.

New Testament Support — 1 Corinthians 12:12 (KJV)

“For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.”

Application: God's work is not intended to depend on one person doing everything. A faithful community serves together, with different people carrying different responsibilities.

NUMBERS 4:49 — EACH PERSON SERVED ACCORDING TO GOD'S COMMAND

Scripture (KJV)

“According to the commandment of the LORD they were numbered by the hand of Moses, every one according to his service, and according to his burden: thus were they numbered of him, as the LORD commanded Moses.”

Explanation

The chapter closes by emphasizing that the census was conducted according to God's command. Each person was counted according to his service and burden.

The duties were not interchangeable at random. Each family had assigned responsibilities, and the census reflected those responsibilities.

Spiritual Insight

This verse summarizes the central message of Numbers 4: God established the assignment, defined the responsibility, and expected obedience.

Notice the repeated emphasis on each person's service and burden.

God did not simply count people; He counted those assigned to specific work.

New Testament Support — Romans 12:6 (KJV)

“Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith;”

Application: Know what God has entrusted to you. Do not neglect your own responsibilities while comparing yourself with others.

MAJOR SPIRITUAL REVELATIONS — PART II

1. Different People Carry Different Responsibilities

The Kohathites carried the sacred furnishings, the Gershonites carried curtains and coverings, and the Merarites carried structural components.

Supporting Scripture — 1 Corinthians 12:14

“For the body is not one member, but many.”

Revelation: God's work requires different assignments. Uniformity is not the same as unity.

2. Supporting Work Is Still Important Work

The Gershonites and Merarites carried items that were necessary for the Tabernacle to function and move.

Supporting Scripture — 1 Corinthians 12:22

“Nay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary:”

Revelation: Never despise the work that supports the larger purpose.

3. Leadership Includes Oversight

Ithamar supervised the work of the Gershonites and Merarites.

Supporting Scripture — Hebrews 13:17

Spiritual leadership involves watching over those entrusted to its care and giving account for that responsibility.

Revelation: Leadership is not merely a title; it is responsibility.

4. Faithfulness Requires Obedience

The census repeatedly emphasizes that Moses and the leaders followed the command of the Lord.

Supporting Scripture — James 1:22

“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only…”

Revelation: Knowing the assignment is not enough. We must carry it out faithfully.

5. Every Assignment Contributes to the Whole

The 8,580 men counted for service belonged to different families with different duties.

Supporting Scripture — Ephesians 4:16

The body grows as each part contributes its share.

Revelation: The larger work advances when each person faithfully performs the responsibility entrusted to them.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. Why did God assign different responsibilities to the Kohathites, Gershonites, and Merarites?

  2. What can we learn from the fact that the Gershonites and Merarites worked under established oversight?

  3. Why should we avoid judging the value of a ministry assignment by how visible it is?

  4. What does Numbers 4:49 teach us about personal responsibility?

  5. How can a church encourage people to remain faithful in supporting roles?

  6. What is the difference between being counted among God's people and faithfully carrying out an assigned responsibility?

  7. What burden or responsibility has God entrusted to you that you need to handle more faithfully?

CLOSING EXHORTATION

Numbers 4 ends by showing us an organized community of servants. The Kohathites, Gershonites, and Merarites did not carry the same things, but their assignments worked together to accomplish the transportation of the Tabernacle.

God established the duties, identified those qualified to serve, and placed the work under appropriate leadership.

The lesson reaches beyond the wilderness.

In the Church, not everyone will preach from the pulpit. Not everyone will lead worship, teach a class, or stand before a congregation. Some will pray, some will teach, some will organize, some will give, and others will faithfully serve in ways that few people notice.

The question is not whether you are carrying what someone else carries. The question is whether you are faithful with what God has placed in your hands.

Do not abandon your assignment because another person's assignment looks more important.

Do not neglect your responsibility because it receives little recognition.

And do not assume that a different assignment means a lesser calling.

God's work requires faithful servants who understand their responsibilities and carry them out with diligence.

FINAL REFLECTION

What has God assigned me to carry?

Am I fulfilling that responsibility faithfully?

Am I respecting the order and accountability associated with my assignment?

Am I contributing to the larger work of God, or am I distracted by what someone else is doing?

CLOSING SCRIPTURE — COLOSSIANS 3:23 (KJV)
