“God’s Order, Our Position, and the Way Into His Presence”

By Pst. JK Woodall

Main Theme

Numbers 1 gave us the numbering of Israel.
Numbers 2 gives us the positioning of Israel.

God did not simply count His people. He organized them around His presence.

As we walk verse by verse, we will see three major themes:

  1. God establishes order.

  2. Every tribe has a God-ordained position.

  3. Judah’s position on the east points us toward Christ, the Lion of the tribe of Judah.

Numbers 2:1

“And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying…”

Teaching Point: The Order Came From God

The arrangement of Israel did not originate with Moses, Aaron, or the tribal leaders.

The LORD spoke.

This is important because the following instructions are not suggestions. They are divine instructions for divine order.

God was preparing Israel to function as one nation.

Principle

Before God moves a people, He establishes order among the people.

Numbers 2:2

“Every man of the children of Israel shall pitch by his own standard, with the ensign of their father’s house…”

Teaching Point: Know Your Position

Every tribe was given a specific place.

The Hebrew word for “standard” is degel (דֶּגֶל), referring to a banner or standard.

The ensign identifies the tribe according to the house of its father.

So Israel had both:

Identity — Who am I?

and

Position — Where do I belong?

But notice the second half:

“…far off about the tabernacle of the congregation shall they pitch.”

The tribes were positioned around the Tabernacle.

Principle

Your position is important, but your position must always be related to God's presence.

Numbers 2:3

“And on the east side toward the rising of the sun shall they of the standard of the camp of Judah pitch…”

Teaching Point: Judah Is on the East

Now God begins establishing the specific arrangement.

Judah is positioned:

On the east side.

And the Bible specifically says:

“toward the rising of the sun.”

This is the direction of sunrise.

But there is something very important about Judah's location.

The Tabernacle entrance also faced east.

Therefore, Judah's camp was positioned on the eastern approach to the Tabernacle.

This becomes significant when we connect Judah to Jesus.

Numbers 2:4

“And his host, and those that were numbered of them, were threescore and fourteen thousand and six hundred.”

Judah's military strength was:

74,600 men

But don't miss the bigger picture.

Judah was not only large in number.

Judah was strategically positioned.

The tribe associated with praise was positioned toward the eastern approach.

Christ Connection

Judah eventually becomes the tribe from which the Messiah comes.

Revelation 5:5 identifies Jesus as:

“the Lion of the tribe of Judah.”

So when we see Judah positioned toward the eastern entrance, we can see a beautiful picture pointing forward to Christ.

Numbers 2:5

“And those that do pitch by him shall be the tribe of Issachar…”

Issachar is positioned with Judah.

God did not place every tribe independently.

He created relationships between tribes.

Judah's camp included:

  • Judah

  • Issachar

  • Zebulun

Principle

God gives us individual assignments, but He also gives us people with whom we must work.

Not everybody camps alone.

Some assignments require partnership.

Numbers 2:6

“And his host, and those that were numbered thereof, were fifty and four thousand and four hundred.”

Issachar had:

54,400 men

The number is recorded because Israel was preparing for movement and warfare.

These numbers remind us that God sees the individuals and the collective army.

Principle

Every person matters to God, and every person contributes to the larger assignment.

Numbers 2:7

“Then the tribe of Zebulun…”

Zebulun is the third tribe connected with Judah's eastern camp.

The eastern camp therefore consisted of:

Judah + Issachar + Zebulun

Three tribes working together under one standard.

Teaching Point

Different tribes.

Different identities.

One camp.

One direction.

Church Application

The Kingdom does not require everybody to be identical.

It requires everybody to be aligned.

Numbers 2:8

“His host, and those that were numbered thereof, were fifty and seven thousand and four hundred.”

Zebulun had:

57,400 men

Now the eastern camp contains:

  • Judah — 74,600

  • Issachar — 54,400

  • Zebulun — 57,400

Total:

186,400

This was the largest of the four major camps.

Numbers 2:9

“All that were numbered in the camp of Judah were an hundred thousand and fourscore thousand and six thousand and four hundred…”

186,400 men

Then comes the important statement:

“They shall set forth first.”

Teaching Point: Judah Goes First

Judah is not merely positioned on the east.

When Israel begins to move:

Judah goes first.

This is significant because Judah is connected to praise.

The Hebrew name Yehudah is associated with the idea of praise/thanksgiving.

Spiritual Principle

Praise goes before movement.

Israel was not going to move randomly.

God established the order:

Judah first.

Numbers 2:10

“On the south side shall be the standard of the camp of Reuben…”

Now God turns to the south side.

Reuben becomes the leader of the southern camp.

The three tribes are:

  • Reuben

  • Simeon

  • Gad

Teaching Point

Judah is not the only tribe with a position.

God gives every group an assignment.

Principle

God's order does not make everyone the same; it gives everyone a place.

Numbers 2:11

“And his host, and those that were numbered thereof, were forty and six thousand and five hundred.”

Reuben had:

46,500 men

Reuben was Jacob's firstborn son.

Yet Reuben does not lead the entire nation.

Judah does.

Teaching Point

Natural position does not automatically equal spiritual assignment.

Reuben was firstborn by birth.

Judah would become prominent in leadership.

Principle

God's assignment is determined by God, not simply by human expectation.

Numbers 2:12

“And those which pitch by him shall be the tribe of Simeon…”

Simeon is joined with Reuben.

Again, God is creating an organized community.

Israel is not twelve isolated tribes.

They are becoming one nation organized around God's presence.

Principle

Unity does not require uniformity.

Numbers 2:13

“And his host, and those that were numbered of them, were fifty and nine thousand and three hundred.”

Simeon had:

59,300 men

The biblical writer continues documenting each tribe.

Why?

Because God cares about order, accountability, and preparation.

Numbers 2:14

“Then the tribe of Gad…”

Gad joins Reuben and Simeon on the south.

The southern camp now consists of:

Reuben + Simeon + Gad

Again, three tribes functioning under one camp arrangement.

Numbers 2:15

“And his host, and those that were numbered of them, were forty and five thousand six hundred and fifty.”

Gad had:

45,650 men

The three southern tribes together totaled:

151,450 men

Numbers 2:16

“All that were numbered in the camp of Reuben were an hundred thousand and fifty and one thousand and four hundred and fifty…”

151,450 men

Then Scripture gives the same pattern:

“And they shall set forth in the second rank.”

Order of Movement

Judah's camp goes first.

Reuben's camp goes second.

There is an established sequence.

Principle

God not only determines where you stand; He determines when you move.

Sometimes the issue isn't whether you have an assignment.

The issue is whether it's your time to move.

Numbers 2:17

“Then the tabernacle of the congregation shall set forward with the camp of the Levites in the midst of the camp…”

Now we arrive at the center of the entire arrangement.

The Tabernacle moves in the midst.

This is the key to understanding the entire chapter.

Israel is not organized around:

  • Moses

  • Judah

  • Reuben

  • Military strength

  • Convenience

Israel is organized around the Tabernacle.

God is at the center.

The Levites have the responsibility of carrying and serving the Tabernacle.

Principle

The presence of God is not supposed to be on the edge of our lives. It belongs at the center.

Numbers 2:18

“On the west side shall be the standard of the camp of Ephraim…”

Now God establishes the western camp.

The tribes are:

  • Ephraim

  • Manasseh

  • Benjamin

This is significant because Ephraim and Manasseh are the two sons of Joseph who received tribal inheritance.

Teaching Point

God continues positioning every tribe around His presence.

No tribe is forgotten.

No tribe is without purpose.

No tribe is allowed to determine its own position.

Numbers 2:19

“And his host, and those that were numbered of them, were forty thousand and five hundred.”

Ephraim's military count:

40,500

The passage is continuing to establish the western camp.

And this gives us a larger picture:

East — Judah

South — Reuben

West — Ephraim

North — Dan

And in the middle:

THE TABERNACLE

The Major Picture of Numbers 2

Put the entire chapter together:

Judah — East
Reuben — South
Ephraim — West
Dan — North

And:

THE TABERNACLE — CENTER

This is not random.

God is teaching Israel:

You are a people organized around My presence.

The Judah → Jesus Connection

Now we come back to the detail I believe is especially important for teaching.

Judah was on the east.

The Tabernacle entrance was on the east.

Therefore, Judah's camp was positioned on the eastern approach to the Tabernacle.

And who ultimately comes from Judah?

Jesus.

Revelation 5:5 calls Him:

“The Lion of the tribe of Judah.”

And Jesus says:

“I am the way…”

So we can see the prophetic picture:

Judah → Eastern Approach → Tabernacle → God's Presence

And fulfilled in Christ:

Jesus → The Way → The Father → God's Presence

This does not mean Judah itself was the literal priestly entrance or that Israelites entered through the tribe of Judah. The priests and Levites had specific responsibilities around the Tabernacle. Rather, Judah's east-side position aligns with the east-facing entrance, giving us a meaningful biblical picture that points forward to Christ.

Final Teaching Statement

Numbers 2 is teaching us more than where the tribes camped.

It teaches us:

God establishes order.

God gives people position.

God determines movement.

God's presence remains at the center.

And Judah's position gives us a beautiful picture of Christ.

Judah was positioned on the east, toward the east-facing entrance of the Tabernacle. Jesus came from Judah, and He is the Lion of the tribe of Judah.

Therefore:

We don't make our own way into God's presence.

We come through Jesus.

Jesus is the Way.
Jesus is the Door.
Jesus is the Lion of Judah.
Jesus is our access to the Father.

Before God moves you, He will position you. And when you move, make sure you are still moving around His presence and through His appointed way.
